Why is there a consultation appointment?
Diagnosing oral and facial pain can be very complex. Dr. Wynne wants to spend the time to determine if endodontic therapy (Root Canal Treatment) is best for you. In some cases, replacing the tooth with an implant or bridge is the best choice. We want to ensure that you are getting the ideal treatment for your unique situation. We will communicate the expectations, costs, risks, and benefits of each option. The consultation appointment also gives us the opportunity to answer all of your questions and look into your insurance coverage.
I have the x-ray from my dentist. Why do I need another one?
- Our office is committed to minimizing your exposure to radiation; only x-rays necessary for proper diagnosis and treatment are considered.
- The following medical-legal reasons are why a new x-ray is necessary
- X-rays from other offices cannot be used in lieu of a new diagnostic x-ray
- On occasion, a person has been given either an out-dated or incorrect x-ray
- A new diagnostic x-ray is the only way to avoid such mishaps
- A new x-ray from an alternative angle will reveal further diagnostic information
Why is root canal therapy needed?
The nerve may become damaged by bacteria associated with past or present decay, a crack in the tooth, or by a traumatic blow. Root canal therapy allows you to keep the natural tooth in a healthy state rather than substituting it with an artificial tooth.
I still have pain after my treatment was completed. Is something wrong?
It is not abnormal to have pain after the treatment. The usual reason for pain is the fact that tooth infection affects not only the tooth, but also surrounding tissue, and time is needed for healing. The severity and duration of post-operative discomfort varies greatly among different individuals.
Will the treatment be painful?
Your comfort is of the utmost importance to us. We will take every measure to ensure that your procedure is painless and comfortable. We schedule ample time for each treatment so that Dr. Wynne can take an unhurried approach to your care. We take great pride in our ability to set you at ease.
Will I need to return to your office for follow-ups after the procedure is finished?
Yes, for some root canal treatments, we recommend that patients return to the office 6 months after the procedure was finished. Our office will send a reminder notice to you when you are due for a recall appointment.
I am really nervous about the treatment, how can you help?
Many people are apprehensive about receiving dental care and we understand. We offer a medication that can be taken orally prior to your appointment. This medication will significantly reduce your anxiety. Since this medication will make you sleepy, you will need a responsible adult to drive you to and from your appointment.
If this medication is right for you, Dr. Wynne can discuss it in more detail during the consultation appointment.
Can I drive after root canal treatment?
Yes. Root canal treatment is usually performed under local anesthesia, just as any other dental treatment. It normally does not have any effects on your capability to drive or do any other work.
Can I go to work after root canal treatment?
Yes. Root canal treatment generally is not different from most other dental procedures, except it takes a longer time, typically 1-2 hours. It usually does not have any effects on your ability to work.
